Cooling Hydrosols for Kids
If you’ve never used a hydrosol, now is the time to give these wonderful aromatic products a try! I use them much more freely than essential oils, and they are so easy when used with kids - no diluting, no mixing, no worries (for the most part).
Hydrosols are part of the steam distillation process. Steam distillation creates two products: essential oil and hydrosol. Put very simply, the essential oil is the ‘fatty’ part of the plant and the hydrosol is the ‘water’ part of the plant. When distillation of the plant material is done, the essential oil sits on top of the hydrosol (remember water and oil don’t mix). Then the essential oil is siphoned off.
Hydosols are becoming more popular and much more accessible. They are something I turn to for a facial spritz, to help calm me, to use in drinks (lavender lemonade anyone...), or to use in a burn blend.
For this blog, I want to focus on kids and how these gentle aromatic plant waters can allow your children a great way to support themselves! You can give your child a .5oz PET plastic spray bottle of hydrosol, label in a way they understand, and allow them to spray when they wish! So easy and so fun for them!
Here are some suggestions:
Use PET plastic bottles - smaller is better & the PET won’t leach.
Label so they understand which one is which – letters or stickers
Know your child. By this, I mean if you know they can be trusted to spray when they want and have access anytime, that’s great. If you feel they may just unscrew the top and gulp it, then supervision is key.

Relaxing/calming hydrosols for summer:
Lavender hydrosol (relaxing, wonderful for skin)
Frankincense hydrosol (calming and wonderful for skin, too)
Hydrosols can be sprayed on face, neck, back, hands, or feet for cooling or relaxing. They can can be used on sunburns, scratches, and bug bites. They are really so versatile!
I would love to hear your experience with hydrosols. The above suggestions are great for parents, too!!
