Give momma some sugar this Mother’s Day! As in, sugar scrubs!

This past weekend, we celebrated Mother’s Day! It was a special day to recognize how amazing those women we call Mom truly are.

When I think of my mom, I think of a strong woman with a sunny smile, a fast laugh, and a strength of character that kept us six kids in line. When you think ‘mom’, what words come to mind? For me, three main words pop up: sunshine, sass, and comfort.

Moms need a bit of a sunshiny disposition to deal with groggy teens in the morning, changing dirty diapers, and keeping the engine of the family schedule chugging along. She needs sass to defend her brood, challenge anyone that is a threat, and know when life is just so much of a thrill that she needs wine to make it through. And, thank goodness for the moms that know how to hug the hurts away, kiss boo-boos, and allow a sick child to nestle in for some snuggles.

So, moms, you deserve a sweet break! Grab some chocolate or wine to enjoy while you use brown sugar in a whole new way.

Sugar scrub base:

Once you make a base you can use any essential oils you’d like, but I have a couple suggestions below. You’ll also need a small bowl, metal spoon or glass stir stick, labels, and paper to write your recipe.

- 4 oz PET plastic jar (glass may slip and break. PET is a plastic that won’t leach and is recyclable!)

- 3-4 oz (approx ½ cup) light brown sugar very lightly packed

- 1 oz (2 TBSP) Jojoba or fractionated coconut oil

That’s it! So sweetly simple. Mix together in the jar or in a bowl.  Add essential oils, mix and place in jar. Label and use within a few weeks because you’re putting wet hands in the jar and there is no preservative in this recipe.

As I started thinking about Mother’s Day, I was immediately drawn to these three essential oils to highlight. This week, I want to use Sweet Orange (sunshine), Ginger (sass), and Cedarwood (comfort).

Sweet Orange (citrus sinensis) – The aroma is bright, sweet, and full bodied citrus. This essential oil is perfect for scrubs. It’s uplifting, yet calming and is great for digestion.

Ginger Zingiber officinale) – The aroma is spicy, exotic, and warm. Ginger helps with confidence, digestion, and supports the respiratory system.

Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) – Aromatically, it is smooth and woody. It assists with calming and opening the breath.

Citrus Spice Sugar Scrub

Great for morning time when you need a little self-care boost and prep you for the day to come.

Calming Sugar Scrub

Enjoy in the evening when you need help with calming down after a long day.

These two sugar scrubs can rid you of tired, dull skin and possibly a bad attitude. No, really, I hope these scrubs help your skin feel luminous and ready for summer!

A bit of advice: don’t overdo it. I suggest using a scrub only once or twice a week.

Skin smoothing tip: Scrub BEFORE you start the shower. Talk about luminous skin!  Follow up with a hydrating body oil (get a recipe here) or body butter (get a recipe here)!
