How Essential Oils Changed My Life (and how they can change yours)
Updated: Jul 23, 2018
When I’m asked how essential oils changed my life, I find it hard to answer.
Why, you might ask?
Essential oils have been a part of my life for so long that I can’t imagine life without them. I literally grew up in a household where essential oils were used on a regular basis. And I’m sure some of your kids will say the same one day. I grew up with a mom that had a very holistic view of our health. Being healthy wasn’t just about using essential oils – it included a wholesome diet, movement, being out in nature, and family connection.
So, there was no one aha! moment for me, it’s been loads of amazing and awe filled moments along this 20+ year aromatic journey!
Turning to oils or Aromatherapy is second nature for me, but I use them differently than some people. I used to splash them everywhere and didn’t know the depth of what an essential oil had to offer until I started studying. Learning and studying with my Aromatherapy teachers (almost 400+ hours!) has broadening the way I think about essential oils, plants, distillers, and Aromatherapy.
Now I try to slow down and really get to know my oils – a great many of them are like old friends. I know which ones to turn to depending on what I need and in return they support me. I challenge you to really KNOW an oil in your cupboard, whether you are experienced with essential oils or new. Working with your essential oils in the following way can change the way you use them, for sure!
Here are some things to ask your new oily friend:
What’s your real (latin) name?
Where are you from?
How long will you be around (shelf life)?
Are you endangered? www.unitedplantsavers.com
What is your main superpower?
What are your more subtle powers?
How do you make me feel emotionally?
Are there any safety guidelines I should know?
Are you safe to use with kids and what age?
What other essential oils or carriers smell good when paired with you?
You can place this information on an index card and organize alphabetically by common name or Latin name. Sit with your new essential oil, use it in a diffuser, jojoba or fractionated coconut oil, inhaler, or lotion. How does this oil make you feel? Did it help you in any way? Be very open to subtle changes and write them down.
When you take this time to get to really know your oils you can have a whole new appreciation for them. It can be hard for us, in this fast paced world, to sit back, breathe deep, tune in, and do this, but it is so worth it. Being in the present moment with these concentrated plant essences is honoring all that went into you getting that little bottle of goodness in your hands.
Hmmm, so this brings me back to the main question – how have essential oils changed my life? I guess after writing this I have new awareness. My journey with them has made me slow down, tune in, and made me a more conscious user of these aromatic oils. I’m better for it!
Here is an essential oil that I use when I’m stepping forward into something new and need support.
Laurel Leaf essential oil Laurus nobilis from Albania 3-4 yr shelf life
Helps with circulation and lymph movement. Deepens the breath (lung activity).
Emotionally makes me feel like I have a backbone and can speak my truth.
Safety: not for those under 5yrs due to 1,8 cineole. Caution for 5-10 yrs.
Laurel likes to hang out with Spearmint, Lime, Sweet Orange, Tangerine, pines/firs, or Lavender.
I made this super simple and there really is no need to over think it. I like to vary my sources of information so I have a well-rounded view. In other words look at well-respected authors in the field, teachers, and Certified/Clinical Aromatherapists. Read books, get newsletters, and take classes!
